M ost of the third-party software that resides on your computer can access the internet, and few offline-only programs are being developed. But there are times when you might not want specific programs installed on your system gaining access to the internet.

Like, for instance, you might not want it to check for updates continuously, you might be annoyed with constant ads that keep showing up, or you might be worried about any sensitive data that is in your software.

If the essential features of the application do not rely on internet connectivity, you can just block a program from accessing the internet altogether.

How can I block access to the Internet?

Windows simplifies this for you. Windows Firewall can not only protect your computer from malware and other security threats but can also be configured to block any program from accessing the internet. That too, without using any third-party software.

How do I block a program in my Windows firewall?

By following just a simple set of steps, you can block any software from accessing the internet. The steps are similar for Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 10.

You can block both inbound traffic or outbound traffic for any program. Inbound traffic refers to all the data coming to your program from a server elsewhere. Outbound traffic is due to a connection initiated by your program.

How To Block A Program From Accessing The Internet In Windows 10, 7, 8?

  1. On your Windows PC, open the Start Menu and go to Control Panel.
  2. Click on Windows Firewall in Control Panel.
  3. On the left side of the next window, click on Advanced settings.
  4. Click on Outbound Rules. Here you can restrict internet access for a particular app.
  5. Under the Actions panel on the right side of the window, click on New Rule.
  6. Click on Program and press Next.
  7. Type the path where your program is installed or locate it with the Browse option. The application path is generally in the form “C:Program Filesapplication.exe” or “C:Program Files(x86)application.exe” where ‘application’ is the name of the program you want to block from having internet access.
  8. In the Action window, select Block the connection. Press Next.
  9. Select when your blocking rules apply to the program. Select all the three options to cut off internet access completely.
  10. Give a name to the new rule you just created. In this example, I have created a rule to block internet connection to Mozilla Firefox, so I have named the rule “Block Firefox.” You can choose any name you desire.
  11. Click on Finish, and your rule gets activated. You should now see the new rule you created under Outbound Rules.

Go ahead and block inbound connections, too, if you want to completely block internet access for the program. Select “inbound rules” in step 4 and the rest of the steps are similar.

So, guys, this is how you can cut-off network access for a particular app and program in Windows 10 and older versions. The above-mentioned method works for almost every program installed on your machine, even the UWP apps that are supported in Windows 10.

Other ways to block internet access in Windows

If Windows Firewall isn’t your cup of tea then are other things you can explore. For instance, you can enable the AirPlane mode in the Action Center that will disable the internet for your entire PC till the time you want.

You can go for it if you want to block internet access temporarily. Furthermore, there is numerous third-party firewall software available for Windows that can do the job efficiently. To name a few, there are Zone Alarm and TinyWall that you can get for free.

Не редко бывают ситуации, когда нужно заблокировать какого-то пользователя в настройках роутера. Я имею введу блокировку Wi-Fi клиента. И в этой статье мы рассмотрим блокировку пользователя на роутере Asus. Инструкция подойдет для всех устройств с темной панелью управления: Asus RT-N12, RT-N18, RT-N10 и т. д. У меня Asus RT-N18, на его примере и продемонстрирую блокировку устройства.

Нужно заметить, что после того как вы в настройках своего маршрутизатора заблокируете какое-то устройство, то оно либо вообще не сможет подключится к роутеру, либо будет подключаться, но доступа в интернет не будет.

Два способа блокировки пользователя Wi-Fi сети на Asus:

  • Первый способ: это обычная, быстрая блокировка доступа к интернету для определенного устройства. Просто привязываем MAC адрес к IP адресу, и блокируем интернет.
  • Второй способ: полная блокировка устройства по MAC-адресу. После этого пользователь даже не сможет подключится к вашей Wi-Fi сети.

Рассмотрим сейчас оба варианта.

Блокируем доступ к интернету для Wi-Fi клиента на роутере Asus

Зайдите в настройки маршрутизатора. Как правило, для этого достаточно подключится к роутеру, и перейти в браузере по адресу 192.168.1.1. Еще у нас есть подробная инструкция. Сразу на главной странице вы увидите вкладку Клиенты. Нажмите на нее. Слева появляться все устройства, которые в данный момент подключены к вашей Wi-Fi сети. Нажмите на пользователя, которого вы хотите заблокировать.

Появится окно, в котором нужно сделать три действия:

  • Напротив MAC and IP address Binding поставить переключатель в положение ON. Тем самым привязать IP-адрес к MAC-адресу. Что бы после перезагрузки роутера, блокировка все ровно действовала.
  • Возле пункта Block Internet Access так же нужно поставить ON. Тем самым запретить доступ к интернету для пользователя.
  • Нажать на кнопку Применить.

Роутер сохранить настройки, и заблокирует интернет для выбранного устройства. Возле него появится специальный значок.

Чтобы обратно все разблокировать, снова нажмите на устройство и отключите пункты меню, которые мы включили.

Полная блокировка подключения к Wi-Fi сети по MAC-адресу на роутере Asus

Если сделать все как я описывал выше, то устройство будет подключаться к беспроводной сети, просто интернет работать не будет. А сейчас мы еще рассмотрим полную блокировку по MAC-адресу. В этом случае, устройство вообще не сможет подключится к вашей сети.

В настройках нужно открыть вкладку Беспроводная сетьФильтр MAC адресов беспроводной сети. Затем включить фильтр, если он выключен, и в меню Режим фильтрации MAC-адресов выбрать Отклонять. Это значит, роутер будет отклонять подключение всех устройств, которые мы добавим в список.

Дальше из списка подключенных устройств выбираем нужное, или прописываем MAC-адрес вручную. И нажимаем на кнопку Добавить, а затем Применить.

Все, устройство будет отключено от Wi-Fi сети и больше не сможет к ней подключиться. Пока вы не удалите его из списка заблокированных.

Если вы заметили, что к вашей сети подключились какие-то сторонние пользователи, то можно еще просто сменить пароль Wi-Fi сети. И обязательно смените пароль для входа в настройки роутера.

This tutorial describes how to re-establish Internet access if blocked by malware. Some malware variants modify Internet browser settings by adding a Proxy Server. In these cases, you will be unable to visit any websites, and thus not able to download the required software to eliminate the security infections. Other types of malware change the computer’s DNS settings or add various entries to your operating system’s Hosts file. By altering these settings, computer viruses can cause redirect issues or completely block the Internet connection. If you cannot access the Internet, and suspect that this is caused by a virus infection, check the settings below.

If you cannot access the Internet due to a malware infection, first try booting your computer in Safe Mode with Networking. You can find out how to do this in our ‘how to remove spyware?’ section. If you are still unable to access the Internet, use these instructions:

Check Proxy Server settings in Internet Explorer:

1. Open Internet Explorer. At the top right corner of the main window, click the ‘wrench’ icon. In the opened drop down menu, choose ‘Internet Options’.

3. In the ‘Connections’ tab, click the ‘LAN settings’ button.

4. In the ‘Lan settings’ window, ensure that the ‘Use a proxy server for your LAN’ option is not checked (otherwise, uncheck it and click ‘OK’).

Check your computer’s DNS settings:

1. Click the ‘Windows logo’ (Start button).

2. In the opened menu, select ‘Control Panel’.

3. In the opened window, click ‘Network and Internet’.

4. In the opened window, click ‘View network status and stats’.

5. Click ‘Local Area Connection’.

6. In the opened window, click the ‘Properties’ button.

7. In the ‘Properties’ window, select ‘Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)’ and click the ‘Properties’ button.

8. In the opened window, check if ‘Obtain DNS server address automatically’ is checked.

Check your operating system’s Hosts file.

Locate your Hosts file. You should find it at %systemroot% system32driversetc (commonly, it will be c:windowssystem32driversetc). Open the Hosts file with Notepad and verify that no unusual values have been added to it.

Hi,
I got the internet to reconnect but my chrome browser stalls while loading any website completely.
E.g. it shows empty thimbnails if I open YouTube or just the top search bar and adjacent links on Facebook.
What say? Should I try resetting chrome to default or reinstall it? Am I missing something?

Those are just examples writtten there by microsoft in newer versions of windows. Lines beginning with ‘#’ are comments and do not affect anything. You can write anything in the comments.

How to Block Internet Access in Specific Apps on Android

A smartphone is only “smart” as long as it has an internet connection because you need a working internet network for various apps to work. However, that also means that these apps take up a lot of our internet bandwidth. And if you totally rely on mobile data for your Android smartphone and you don’t have an unlimited plan, your bandwidth should get over pretty soon. The problem is, some apps use the internet even when they are running in the background. While communication apps like WhatsApp, Messenger need to be connected to the internet all the time, other apps don’t really need to be connected always. So, if you have a limited data plan or even a broadband WiFi connection which has a monthly bandwidth limit, you should limit the internet usage of apps on your Android smartphone.

The good news is, there are ways to block internet access in specific apps on Android. You can do it through Android’s built-in options or you can use a third party app. First, let’s take a look at how you can restrict internet for specific apps on Android natively:

Restrict Background Data on Android Natively

You can easily set background data restrictions for specific apps on Android. All you need to do, is head over to Settings->Apps and select the app you want to block background data for. In the App Info page, you can tap “Data usage” and here, enable “Restrict app background data”. This makes sure that the app does not fetch any mobile data while running in the background. However, if you open the app, it will use the internet.

If you want to restrict background data for all the apps, you can go to Settings->Data usage, hit the three dot button and tap on “Restrict background data”. Here, you can also set a monthly mobile data limit, so that you know when your mobile data is close to getting over.

Android N includes a Data Saver mode, which basically restricts the background data on all apps. However, you can select the apps you want to enable unrestricted data access for.

While the native Android methods work fine if you are looking to only restrict usage on mobile data, there are third party apps that let you block mobile data as well as WiFi connectivity for certain apps:

While there are a few good apps that let you block internet for specific apps, we’ll suggest you Mobiwol because it’s free and it brings most of the features you’d need. So, install Mobiwol on your Android smartphone and follow the steps:

1. When you first open Mobiwol, you will see the home page of the app with its main options listed upfront. You can go to “Firewall Rules“, where you will find all the apps on your device including the system apps. You can just tap on the mobile network & WiFi icon to disable the respective connections for the app.

Note : Be careful to not block system apps because that may lead to unexpected behaviour and inconsistent performance of your device.

2. Once done, you can go back to the main page of the app and turn on “Firewall Status”. When you turn it on, the app will make a VPN connection request. Tap “Ok” and the firewall will turn on.

Note : Mobiwol and most other similar firewall apps create a VPN connection, so that they can filter the internet connection on your device to stop usage on blocked apps.

3. Then, you can try opening the blocked apps and you will see that they don’t have internet access. Mobiwol also lets you check the apps that are using the connection in the background via “Connection Logs”.

Other than that, you can check out the app settings to make sure it auto-starts on reboot, accept or block newly installed apps, get log notifications and its frequency and get tips about the app.
