Change account password

Change or reset the password of a macOS user account

You can change the password that you use to log in to your Mac, or reset the password if you don’t remember it.

The password of your macOS user account is also known as your login password. It’s the password that you use to log in to your Mac and make certain changes, such as installing software.

Change your password

If you know your password and can use it to log in to your account, you can change your password in Users & Groups preferences:

  1. Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu, then click Users & Groups.
  2. Select your user name from the list of users.
  3. Click the Change Password button, then follow the onscreen instructions.

Reset your password

If you don’t remember your password, or it isn’t working, you might be able to reset it using one of the methods described below. But first try these simpler solutions:

  • Make sure that you’re typing the correct uppercase or lowercase characters. If your keyboard has Caps Lock turned on, the password field shows a Caps Lock symbol .
  • If the password field shows a question mark, click it to display a password hint that might help you to remember.
  • Try to log in without a password. If that works, you can then add a password by following the steps to change your password.
  • Try to log in with the Apple ID password that you use for iCloud. If you just changed that password and the new password isn’t working, try the old password first. If that works, you should be able to use the new password from then on.

Reset using your Apple ID

In some macOS versions, you can use your Apple ID to reset your login password. At the login screen, keep entering a password until you see a message saying that you can reset your password using Apple ID. If you don’t see the message after three attempts, your account isn’t set up to allow resetting with Apple ID.

  1. Click next to the Apple ID message, then follow the onscreen instructions to enter your Apple ID and create a new password. You’ll be asked to restart when done.
  2. Log in with your new password.
  3. Determine whether to create a new login keychain.

Reset using another admin account

If you know the name and password of an admin account on your Mac, you can use that account to reset the password.

  1. Log in with the name and password of the other admin account.
  2. Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu, then click Users & Groups.
  3. Click , then enter the admin name and password again.
  4. Select your user name from the list of users.
  5. Click the Reset Password button, then follow the onscreen instructions to create a new password:
  6. Choose Log Out from the Apple menu.
  7. Log in to your account using your new password.
  8. Determine whether to create a new login keychain.

Reset using the Reset Password assistant (FileVault must be on)

If FileVault is turned on, you might be able to reset your password using the Reset Password assistant:

  1. Wait up to a minute at the login screen, until you see a message saying that you can use the power button on your Mac to shut down and start up again in Recovery OS. If you don’t see this message, FileVault isn’t on.
  2. Press and hold the power button until your Mac turns off.
  3. Press the power button again to turn on your Mac.
  4. When the Reset Password window appears, follow the onscreen instructions to create a new password.
If you need to connect to Wi-Fi, move your pointer to the top of the screen and use the Wi-Fi menu to connect. To exit without resetting your password, choose Apple menu > Restart.
  5. When done, click Restart.
  6. If you were able to reset your password with the Reset Password assistant, log in to your account using your new password.
  7. Determine whether to create a new login keychain.

Reset using your Recovery Key (FileVault must be on)

If FileVault is turned on and you have a FileVault Recovery Key, you can use that key to reset your password.

  1. At the login screen, keep entering a password until you see a message saying that you can reset your password using your Recovery Key. If you don’t see the message after three attempts, FileVault isn’t on.
  2. Click next to the message. The password field changes to a Recovery Key field.
  3. Enter your Recovery Key. Use uppercase characters, and include the hyphens.
  4. Follow the onscreen instructions to create a new password, then click Reset Password when done.
  5. Determine whether to create a new login keychain.

If you can’t log in with your new password after restarting your Mac, take these additional steps:

  1. Restart again, then immediately hold down Command-R or one of the other macOS Recovery key combinations until you see the Apple logo or a spinning globe.
  2. When you see the macOS Utilities window, choose Utilities > Terminal from the menu bar.
  3. In the Terminal window, type resetpassword , then press Return to open the Reset Password assistant pictured above.
  4. Select ”My password doesn’t work when logging in,” then click Next and follow the onscreen instructions for your user account.

Create a new login keychain, if necessary

After resetting your password and logging back in to your account, you might see an alert that the system was unable to unlock your login keychain. This is expected, because the passwords for your user account and login keychain no longer match. Just click the Create New Keychain button in the alert.

If you didn’t see an alert about your login keychain, or you see other messages asking for your old password, reset your keychain manually:

  1. Open Keychain Access, which is in the Utilities folder of your Applications folder.
  2. Choose Preferences from the Keychain Access menu, then click the Reset My Default Keychain button in the preferences window. After you enter your new password, Keychain Access creates an empty login keychain with no password. Click OK to confirm.

If you don’t see a Reset My Default keychain button, close the preferences window and select the “login” keychain from the left side of the Keychain Access window. Press the Delete key, then click Delete References.

  • Choose Log Out from the Apple menu to return to the login screen.
  • Log in to your account using your new password. Your account password and login keychain password now match again.
  • Change or update your email password

There are two places you can change or update your email account password: in Outlook and with your email provider (for example, Office 365, Gmail, Yahoo, iCloud, or Xfinity). You may need to change your password one or both places.

Читать еще:  Как odt перевести в word

Why are there two places to change my password?

There are two things you need in order to access your email.

An email account with an email provider such as Office 365, Gmail, iCloud, or a corporate Exchange server

A program that can display your email messages and allow you to read, reply to, and organize these email messages

When should I change my password with my email provider?

    Change your password when:

You think someone has stolen or gained access to your email account password

Your email provider has sent you a password reset link

You forgot your email account password

Change your password with your email provider

See the following sections for instructions on changing your email account password for several major email providers. If your email account provider isn’t listed, contact your admin or the email provider’s help desk.

    Go to the Gmail website.

Click your picture in the upper right corner of the screen, then select My Account.

    Click Sign-in & security.

Scroll down to Signing in to Google. There you can change your password and then select App passwords to generate a unique password to enter into Outlook 2016, Outlook 2013, and Outlook 2010. Gmail requires the use of two-factor authentication and an app password to check your email in Outlook. For more information, see Set up two-factor authentication for Gmail.

    Go to the Yahoo website.

Click your name or picture in the upper right corner of the screen, then select Account Info. You may need to click the name of your account on the next screen.

Follow the prompts to select your account name and enter your existing password. If you forgot your password, click I forgot my password.

On the left side of the screen, click Account security, then click Change password and follow the prompts.

When you’re done, scroll down to verify that Two-step verification is on, then click Manage app passwords. For more information about generating a unique password to enter into Outlook 2016, 2013, and 2010, see Set up two-factor authentication for Yahoo.

Go to the Apple ID website.

Enter your Apple ID and Password and then click the arrow. If you forgot your password, click Forgot Apple ID or password? and follow the prompts.

If iCloud requires you to enter a Two-Factor Authentication code, obtain the code from one of your other Apple devices and enter the six digits, then click Trust when iCloud asks you to trust this browser.

Click the drop-down next to your name and picture in the upper right corner of the screen.

At the top of the next screen, click Manage under Apple ID. You may need to enter your Apple ID and password again.

Under Security, click Change Password. and follow the prompts.

When you’re done, scroll down to verify that Two-Factor Authentication is on, then click Generate Password under App-Specific Passwords. For more information about generating a unique password to enter into Outlook 2016, 2013, and 2010, see Set up two-factor authentication for iCloud.

Other email accounts will require you to change your email account password on the website for the account provider. For example, to change the password for an Xfinity account, go to the Xfinity website and follow the prompts. Every email account provider has slightly different steps for changing a password.

Update the password stored in Outlook

To update your password in Outlook, use the following steps.

Note: Outlook can’t change the password with your email provider. In other words, if you forget your Outlook.com password, you’ll first have to see the section Change your Outlook.com password to change the password Outlook.com has for your account, then update the password in Outlook for Windows.

There are two possible ways to update your password in Outlook. The specific steps you need to take depend on your version of Outlook and whether you’re an Office 365 subscriber or purchased Outlook as a standalone application.

If you’re an Office 365 subscriber with monthly updates, use the following steps:

In Outlook, choose File > Account Settings > Update Password.

Update the password or app password and click OK.

If you’re an Office 365 subscriber with semi-annual updates or you have Outlook 2019, 2016, 2013, or 2010, or purchased Outlook as a standalone application, use the following steps:

In Outlook, choose File > Account Settings > Account Settings.

Select the email account you want to change, and then choose Change.

In the Change Account window, update your password.

NOTE: POP and IMAP accounts will not provide this option if your entry point is File > Account Settings > Account Settings. If that is the case go to File > Account Settings > Manage Profiles, Select Emails Accounts, then select the email account you want to change, and then choose Change. In the Change Account window, update your password.

Select Close after Outlook tests your account settings, then Finish > Close to return to Outlook.

Does my email account need an app password?

If you use Outlook to send and receive email from your Gmail, Yahoo, iCloud, Apple, Outlook.com, or @me.com accounts, you may not use your regular email account password to set up these accounts. These email providers may require you to use two-factor authentication and an app password. This is a one-time password that you enter in place of your regular account password when setting up your account for the first time.

For more information, see the sections on setting up two-factor authentication for Gmail, Yahoo, and iCloud.

To update your password in Outlook for Mac, use the following steps.

On the Tools tab, select Accounts.

In the left pane, select the account you want to change the password for.

In the right pane, enter a new password in the Password box.

Close the Accounts window. Outlook will save the password automatically.

Because every Internet service provider and web host is different, we suggest you contact the company for additional help with changing your username or password.

      Changing online forums and accounts

Like the Computer Hope forums, most forums allow the user to change their password only through the profile or account settings. However, most companies do not allow you to change your username. Usually, you must create a new account to do this. If you need additional help with changing your username or password on another website, we suggest you contact the company or webmaster in control of that website.

If you cannot access an online account because you do not know the username or password, look for a link on the account login page for retrieving a forgotten username or password. This option may be able to help in determining what your username or password is or help in resetting your account password.

How to get your Raven Password

      Students

The Student Registry will email you about completing your registration and collecting your CRSid and temporary Raven password before you start your course at Cambridge. These will be sent to the email address you gave when you applied to the University. You can change your password to something more memorable on the Raven Password Management site.

      Staff and visitors

Your CRSid and Registration Code will be given to you when you arrive at your institution. You will need to use these on the new user sign-up page to set up a temporary initial password. Make a note of this initial password, as you will not be able to retrieve it again. You must change your password to something more memorable on the Raven Password Management site.

      Administrative staff

Your Administrative Computing Network (ACN) username and password will be given to you by the UAS Service Desk when you arrive at Cambridge. These give you access to your email (unless you are in ICE), the ACN Desktop, its storage drives and the Remote Desktop.

      Choose a strong password

Your Raven password protects your valuable personal data, so it’s critical that you choose something that can’t easily be cracked, but that you can remember.

The current best practice advice is to pick three random words, for example:

      tango-teakettle-barbecue

The National Cyber Security Centre provides some useful advice in their blog post Three random words or #thinkrandom.

You can see how long it would take a computer to crack your password at the
How Secure Is My Password website (in our example, it’s three decillion years!).

Please don’t share your password with anyone else, no matter how much you trust them, and please don’t use the same password you use for Raven on any other sites or systems.

Set up your self-service password recovery

You can reset your Raven password using a recovery token sent to a recovery email address or mobile phone number, if you’ve configured your password recovery options.

To do this, log in to the Raven Password Management site and follow the ‘Configure’ link under ‘Self-service password recovery’.

You’ll need to nominate a recovery email address or mobile phone number (or both) and set up at least two security questions. The answers to your security questions should be information that only you know and that wouldn’t be easy to find online (for example, avoid things that you might have posted on Facebook or other social media sites).

      If you’ve forgotten your password

If you forget your Raven password, you can reset it in two ways:

Self-service password recovery: visit the self-service password recovery site and click the ‘Reset your password’ button.

Password reset token: Most colleges and departments also have an authorised password resetter who can give you a code to reset your password. You can also get one by visiting UIS. You’ll need to show either your University Card, passport or photo driving licence as proof of identity. Find out more.

      Problem solving

If you’re having problems accessing online University systems, use the Raven test page to check that your Raven password is working correctly. If it isn’t, you’ll need to recover your password (see above).

If your password is working but you’re still having problems accessing a particular system, you’ll need to contact your local IT support to arrange access. If they’re unable to help, contact the UIS Service Desk.
